Sustainability at Theraline

At Theraline, we love and live for family.
Of course, this also means that we want to preserve and protect our environment for our children. To this end, we are pursuing a large number of sustainability projects and more are being added all the time.

These are our current sustainability projects:

Environmentally friendly energy generation

Sustainable energy is the hobbyhorse of our company owner Oliver Saul, who was already intensively involved with this topic during his mechanical engineering studies.

We have been operating a combined heat and power plant (decentralised energy supply, ecologically beneficial) for 12 years, which supplies production and the entire company with environmentally friendly energy.
In addition, we have installed solar cells on the roof of our company headquarters in the Westerwald, which cover the entire electricity requirements of our production. Our sewing facility in India is also completely powered by solar cells.

Certified free of harmful substances for the health of mother and child

The TÜV Toxproof became OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100

Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of your family. The absence of harmful substances in all filling and cover materials used and one hundred per cent product safety are always our top priority. Theraline nursing and pregnancy pillows with pearl filling have therefore carried the Toxproof® label from TÜV-Rheinland since 1998. This certification for non-toxic nursing pillows was developed in collaboration with Theraline. At the end of July 2021, the TÜV Rheinland test seal was replaced by the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 seal from the Hohenstein Institute. The well-known seal gives you the assurance that you are purchasing a product that is guaranteed to be safe for your health. All our textile products fulfil the highest level of this standard (category 1 baby and toddler). A transitional period has been agreed with TÜV Rheinland, during which our ticking may still have a TÜV label, no label or the new OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 label. In any case, you can rely on our experience: We were the first supplier of nursing pillows to begin the elaborate treatment of our pillows against styrene vapours back in 1993 and have continued to develop our expertise in this area ever since.

The strict tests for harmful substances and the extensive catalogue of measures of STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® include:

  • Important legal regulations such as banned azo colourants, pentachlorophenol, cadmium, lead (US-CPSIA), etc.
  • Numerous chemicals of health concern, even if they are not yet legally regulated
  • Numerous environmentally relevant substance classes
  • Limit values in Annexes XVII and XIV of the REACH Regulation as well as relevant substances on the ECHA SVHC candidate list.

Switch to bamboo

In 2020, we began gradually switching our plain-coloured jersey pillowcases for all our products to viscose made from bamboo fibres with organic cotton. The vast majority have now been converted, with the few others following gradually. Of course, no finished fabrics will be disposed of here either.

Bamboo has great advantages over other basic fibres for textiles. Firstly, there are over 1,500 different types of bamboo. This diversity makes it more adaptable to different climate zones than most other woods. In addition, it can grow on over 70 per cent of the earth’s land surface. Bamboo is extremely robust and one of the fastest renewing resources on earth due to its immense growth rate. Bamboo is also abundant in many rural areas where economic development is limited and can therefore also bring social benefits. This is because rural areas have the opportunity to preserve their culture and lifestyle and at the same time we can preserve theirs.

In addition, we are convinced that this is the perfect feel-good fibre, which is not only wonderfully smooth, soft and particularly colour-stable, but also has an exceptionally temperature-regulating effect – cooling in summer and warming in winter.

Organic range expanded

If you still don’t want to do without single-colour, pure cotton covers, you will now find a larger selection of colours in our organic cotton range.

Our tip :
60 ° wash possible – 40 ° for the environment

The tickings and outer covers of our pillows (except our plush moon) can be washed at up to 60 °C. As a rule, however, a 40 °C wash is completely sufficient. This saves energy and protects the environment. We therefore recommend washing our products at 40 °C only.

Saving packaging waste and plastic

In line with the motto “less is more”, we are scrutinising all our packaging and have already reduced a lot of packaging to a minimum as a result. Wherever possible, we are replacing plastic packaging and elaborate cardboard boxes with sleeve or loop packaging. Since September 2023, this also applies to our strongest product: “The Original Theraline Pregnancy & Nursing Pillow”, but also, for example, “The Baby Pillow” and our newer products “The Kids Pillow” and “The Pillow”. From the beginning, the bamboo moon was “only” given a cardboard loop packaging. Of course, no packaging that has already been produced will be disposed of; it will be used up completely. This means that the changeover in retail may only gradually become visible.

The Green Dot

The amount of CO2 avoided in 2022 through our contributions to the Dual System corresponds to the amount that 6,484 m2 of forest filter out of the air in one year (view certificate here).

Nursing pillow with Oeko-Test award

In addition to the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 seal, our original Theraline nursing pillow with the organic cover “fuchsia-cappuccino” was awarded the top rating of “very good” in the “After-effects” category by ÖKO-TEST in October 2018. ÖKO-TEST had already awarded the Original Theraline as the first EPS bead pillow with “very good” in September 2003.

We are particularly pleased about the award for our “large” pillow “fuchsia-cappuccino”. Of course, the other “large” and “small” pillows also fulfil the requirements of the ÖKO-TEST magazine – because all pillows are made from largely identical materials. So even if you decide in favour of a different pillow from our range: You can be sure to purchase an all-round “healthy” product. We have been using only non-toxic materials for all Theraline products since 1993. The micro-fine bead filling is freed from any harmful substances with special care.
